Leadership for new managers: navigating a changing work reality

By Sabien Faber

The workplace has fundamentally changed. Hybrid working is the norm, younger generations have different expectations, and the leader's role has shifted from task delegation to coaching and guidance.

What employees expect

Millennials and Generation Z don't look for a boss but a mentor. They value growth opportunities, meaningful work, autonomy and flexibility. They expect accessible leaders who understand team dynamics and foster psychological safety, an environment in which people feel comfortable sharing ideas, taking risks and learning from mistakes.

Emotional intelligence as a foundation

For new managers, emotional intelligence is not a luxury but a necessity. The ability to regulate your own emotions while also understanding the needs of team members strengthens relationships and builds trust.

The challenge lies in the balance: how do you combine individual autonomy with team cohesion and shared goals? How do you give direction without controlling?

No standard training

At AVOP we don't believe in generic leadership trainings for new managers. Every leader brings their own background, personality and context. That is why we work with tailored trajectories that emphasise:

  • Self-knowledge: who are you as a leader, what are your patterns?
  • Critical reflection: what works, what doesn't, and why?
  • Experiential learning: not only reading and listening, but doing and reflecting

The first step

Starting leadership isn't a matter of learning to use a toolkit. It is a personal development process in which you discover how you can best lead, this team, in this context, with your qualities.

At AVOP we guide that discovery. With psychological depth and practical relevance.
